A kids dentist should be one of the most important assets in your child’s wellness and development. Just as you know it is important to make consistent visits to the doctor’s office, dental appointments will keep your child on track with their well-being. Never get behind on these checkups. If you are good about making and keeping these appointments, your child can develop positive oral health habits.
The need to go to the kids dentist
Responsible, caring parents will help their children brush and floss starting from the time that teeth first appear. By the time the child is able to brush alone, the parents will continue to encourage these habits. Still, these activities are not enough to promote the health the child needs. Regular visits to the kids dentist will establish a pattern the child can follow throughout life. The dentist can also find cavities, infections or other issues that parents and children could not identify or treat alone.
The initial appointment
Even though a child may only have one or two teeth and cannot even speak yet, it does not mean parents should not start making dental appointments. Dental care should not start once the child has several teeth or brushes and flosses without help. About six months after the first tooth breaks through the gums, parents should introduce the child to the dentist. This first checkup usually occurs around age 1.
Frequency
Going to the kids dentist is not a random occurrence or a one-time event. These appointments should be a priority for parents. Children should come to the dentist’s office every six months for regular checkups. This semiannual pattern should continue throughout life well into adulthood. Parents should not get behind in these visits. It can be difficult to catch up on good dental health if the child has missed years of appointments.
Treatment and restorations
If a child has severe toothache, bleeding gums, or broken or chipped teeth, parents should not wait for the next wellness checkup. A kids dentist can make emergency appointments for serious issues. At a semiannual exam, if the dentist spots a cavity or an infection, the staff will make an appointment for the child to return in the next week or two.
Ongoing problems
Children with more serious oral health issues such as gum disease, significant decay or the recurrence of infections may set up more frequent treatment plans with the kids dentist. Depending on the child and the condition, quarterly or even monthly appointments may be necessary. The dentist will select a treatment plan that makes sense.
Keep up to date
Life gets busy and demanding, so it is understandable when you may miss an appointment or forget about upcoming treatment. However, you should be mindful of your child’s dental health and how a kids dentist can help maintain healthy, strong teeth. Starting from the earliest of ages through the teenage years, bring your child into the dentist’s office regularly. Call today and set up an appointment with a pediatric dentist.
