5 Reasons to Visit a Pediatric Dentist

Visiting a pediatric dentist is a great way to ensure your child receives the dental care they need.

Children tend to be more vulnerable to tooth decay than adults, which is why it is important to ensure that proper dental care is given by visiting a pediatric dentist regularly.

Reasons to visit a pediatric dentist

There are various reasons to have your child visit a pediatric dentist. In fact, it is just as important, if not more so, for children to receive proper dental care as it is for adults.

The following are five common reasons to have your child visit a pediatric dentist.

Routine checkup

First and foremost, it is important for children and adults alike to visit the dentist for a routine checkup several times each year. In many instances, even when proper oral hygiene is practiced, children can still develop cavities and other oral health concerns.

Additionally, many oral health concerns can go unnoticed and require a professional oral examination by a pediatric dentist to determine the issue.

A routine checkup by a pediatric dentist can help ensure your child does not develop any minor oral health issues that could develop into more serious problems.

Dental cleaning

While a dental cleaning may not be necessary with every routine checkup, it is encouraged to have your child receive a dental cleaning a couple of times each year to ensure that they do not have a buildup of plaque, which can lead to cavities and gum complications.

While good oral health starts with good oral hygiene, plaque buildup can develop regardless, especially in children.

Subsequently, it is helpful to have a pediatric dentist remove the plaque during a routine dental cleaning procedure.

Cavity prevention

While a deep cleaning and good oral hygiene are great at preventing cavities in children, it may not be all that is needed.

Children have sensitive enamel that is vulnerable to erosion. As a result, many children require dental sealants or other preventive care to ensure their enamel is protected and cavities do not develop.

With dental sealants, children can prevent more expensive and invasive dental fillings later on.

Dental crowns

In some cases, children may need a dental crown if one or more of their teeth become severely damaged, especially if the tooth, or teeth, become chipped or cracked.

A pediatric dentist can determine whether a dental crown is needed or helpful for a child with a tooth issue.

In some cases, dental bonding may be a better option.

Emergency care

Children can be reckless sometimes. As a result, they tend to be at a much higher risk of damaging their teeth through a physical injury, such as falling off of a trampoline, tripping while running down the stairs, etc.

If a child’s tooth, or multiple teeth, become severely damaged or completely knocked out by accident, a pediatric dentist can meet their needs and ensure proper treatment is provided.
